Stay Healthy - Stay Active

We are all aware of the importance of keeping active and healthy. It helps us to fight numerous disease including heart disease, cancer and diabetes. 


Unfortunately, we cannot escape the news and the new virus ‘Covid-19’ 

Some people may be a little anxious during these unfamiliar times, and questioning whether to continue with their weekly exercise regimes. 


Experts suggest that keeping active – especially at the moment is incredibly important in the fight against Covid-19





Here are a few benefits of exercise: 

Reduced stress: 

We have found ourselves in very unfamiliar circumstances; this can often lead to increased stress and anxiety. Exercise is proven to improve your mood and decrease feelings of depression, anxiety and stress.  


It can help aid sleep:

Good quality sleep helps to support your immune system; and regular exercise can help you relax and sleep better. It also does not matter what kind of exercise you do, whether it’s aerobic or resistance


Maintain a healthy weight: 

The more exercise you do the more calories you will burn; even when you are not exercising. 


It boosts your immune system:

Exercising will improve your body’s ability to pump oxygen and nutrients around your body that are required to fuel your cells that fight bacteria and viruses  


Increases your energy levels: 

Exercising will improve the strength and efficiency of your cardiovascular system (heart & lungs) which helps to get essential nutrients to your muscles. When your heart and lungs are working better everyday tasks including a kick around in the park will be much easier


So before you bail on your important exercise routine, ask yourself a few questions: 

  1. Are you in an area, which is under strict quarantine?
  2. Are you one of the higher risk categories?  
  3. Do you care for someone who is considered a higher risk? 

If you answer no to the above, you are fine to carry on with your usual fitness routine.


Here are a few alternatives, if you are unable to get to your local leisure centre:

  • Take a walk outside, visit your local park 
  • Download a home workout off YouTube 
  • Subscribe to Les Mills on Demand
